A Rich Family History
The barn sits on land once part of the Rebennack family farm, a property that has been in the family for over 150 years. Jacob and Marie Rebennack, originally from Indiana, purchased the property just before retirement. The family settled in the area a few years later, building a thriving farm with cows, horses, and various livestock to support their crops. Over the years, they cultivated potatoes, apples, blueberries, corn, and more.
In the 1920s, as the farm grew, the family built the barn to accommodate their increasing agricultural needs. Unfortunately, the original barn burned down and had to be rebuilt sometime around 1930. The barn served as a hub for farming until the 1950s, when new FDA requirements for pasteurization led to the end of their dairy operations.

A Barn in Decline
Sadly, in the early 1990s, the property—including the beloved barn—was sold off, leading to years of neglect and disrepair. However, in 2018, Jay and Dena Hornung (née Rebennack) were able to purchase the property once again, returning the farm to the Rebennack family. Determined to restore the barn to its former beauty, they turned to Stable Hollow Construction for the barn restoration.
Restoring the Barn’s Charm and Functionality
Work on the barn began in October 2022, with the goal of blending modern barn restoration techniques with traditional craftsmanship. Jay and Dena envisioned using the barn as a space for entertaining family and friends, while also making it accessible to the public in the future. Their vision focused on preserving the barn’s original charm while incorporating insulation and low-maintenance features to ensure it would stand the test of time.
Once beam repairs were completed, the team worked to preserve the original wood siding by securing it back onto the barn. Insulation was added to the outside to improve energy efficiency, while new barn red metal board-and-batten siding was installed to maintain the classic look while offering durability.
The barn’s ceiling was outfitted with new wood planking, keeping the original rustic feel intact. A Standing Seam metal roof completed the exterior transformation, ensuring the barn would require minimal upkeep for generations to come. A new cupola crafted from durable PVC material, along with a classic weather vane, adds a final touch of charm to the restored roof.

Custom Touches and Detailed Craftsmanship
Throughout the barn, Stable Hollow carpentry’s team brought Jay and Dena’s vision to life with meticulous attention to detail. The carpenters crafted custom wooden railings and stairs, designed two loft areas, and even added bookcases behind the ladders to maximize space. Traditional sliding barn doors were custom-built to maintain the authentic barn aesthetic.
“I had seen the work Stable Hollow had done on several other barns and on their website. I had no doubt that I wanted them to handle our barn restoration,” Jay shared. “Their attention to detail and craftsmanship is second to none!”
